Kali Czekaj... Dancer. Thinker. Doer.

Born and raised in Huron, Ohio, I grew up with a very well rounded dance education, with a great passion for jazz and contemporary dance. I started dancing because I loved the way it felt to perform and how when it felt to be on stage. With that initial passion, I wanted to be proficient in technique to go along with my affirmation for the stage. A great deal of my training comes from The Moving Company School of Dance in Sandusky, Ohio. After my years of studio dance elementary through high school, I found myself wanting to further my dance education at the collegiate level. I started my undergraduate studies as a dance major at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, where I studied under Ursula Payne, Teena Marie Custer, and Nola Nolen and vastly improved my technical abilities and broadened my views of the dance world. I have had the great opportunity to be a part of Cedar Point’s Luminosity show as a dancer during the Summer ’16 season. I am currently continuing my undergraduate studies in the Department of Dance at The Ohio State University, where I am focusing in Performance and choreography. Currently, I have the opportunity of working with Sofie Clemmensen and traveling to Denmark with 14 other OSU dance students for six weeks during the summer of 2017. Post graduation, I hope to use my passion for dance to make statements in the dance world with my choreographic voice.

From the moment I could walk, I have been dancing my way through life. I love the way that movement feels in my body and how fulfilling it is to work so hard for something and finally accomplish my goals. Every aspect of dancing and movement fascinates me, but what I am most intrigued in is performance and choreography. I have noticed that when I watch dance, I am particularly drawn to certain dancers in every cast that I watch and I wonder what it is about those dancers that makes them so fascinating to watch. I also find myself absolutely mesmerized by movement that makes you absolutely have to watch it. My hope for my own career post grad is to be able to perform and choreograph pieces of work that make people want to watch and listen to what I have to say and what I have to give to the world of dance.

At The Ohio State University, I am not only refining my movement quality and technical skills, I am also exploring composition and media. Composition is currently part of my focus within my dance degree, but I have a growing interest in media and the effects that media and technology have on the body and composition. Here is where I will be exploring these areas of interest.
